The Shadebourne Pillow

Free shipping  ·  60 nights to decide  ·  We pay return shipping

Your pillow was right at bedtime.

By morning it had moved. Loose fill migrates out from under the weight of your head over eight hours, piles up at the edges, and leaves you lower than where you started. The pillow is correct for about an hour and wrong for the other seven. That is why you feel it at 6am instead of at the moment it goes wrong.

The Shadebourne Pillow has nothing loose inside it.

  • One solid core. Nothing in there that can move while you sleep.
  • Three set heights: 4.5, 5.5 and 6.5 inches. Changed in under a minute.
  • Work out your number with a tape measure before you spend anything.
  • 60 nights to decide, because two weeks is not long enough to know.

If this sounds familiar

You already tried the adjustable one.

The one where you take the stuffing out. You took some out. You put some back. You tried it a little lower, then a lot lower, then somewhere in between. Each version cost you a night to test, and none of them held.

Somewhere in there the return window closed while you were still being patient.

So you started wondering whether the problem was your neck rather than the pillow. It was the pillow. Here is the part nobody explains.

Why it keeps happening

Loose fill cannot hold a height for eight hours.

Lie on your side and your shoulder presses into the mattress. Your head is left sitting several inches above it with nothing but air in between. That space is why height matters, and every pillow in this category will tell you so.

What they do not tell you is what happens to the height after you fall asleep. Shredded fill behaves like sand. Press on it for eight hours and it moves out from under the pressure and piles up somewhere else. The height you chose is gone by the middle of the night, and there is no way to get it back without waking up and rebuilding it.

So you did not pick the wrong height. You picked a height that did not stay.

Same pillow. Two different heights.

A solid core has nothing inside it that can migrate. That is a structural difference rather than a performance claim, which means you do not have to take our word for it. You can feel it the first morning.

How this one is built

One solid core. Three set heights.

The pillow is one sculpted piece of slow recovery memory foam. Not a bag of shredded fill. The shape you put your head on is the shape it was cut to, and it is the same shape in the morning.

The height is set underneath it. Two flat one inch inserts slide in below the contoured top. Both out is 4.5 inches. One in is 5.5. Both in is 6.5. The surface your head rests on never changes. Only the height under it does.

You can go back to a setting that worked. You can tell someone else which one you use. That is what a setting is, and it is not something a handful of stuffing can give you.

Changing it

About a minute, and you can go back.

A concealed zip runs along the bottom edge. Open it, slide an insert in or out, close it. The zip sits underneath, so you never feel it and you never see it.

No unstuffing. No shredded fill on the bedroom floor. No bag of spare filling to find somewhere to keep. Three settings, one inch apart, and every one of them is reversible.

4.5 in

Both inserts out. Smaller frames and softer mattresses.

5.5 in

One insert in. Where most people land.

6.5 in

Both inserts in. Longer shoulders and firm mattresses.

Before you buy

Work out your number with a tape measure.

Sit up straight, relaxed. Measure the straight line distance from the top of your shoulder to the top of your ear. That distance is the height your pillow has to fill. It takes about thirty seconds and you can do it right now, before you spend anything.

Our answer

Our lowest setting is probably still too high for you.

The Shadebourne Pillow starts at 4.5 inches with both inserts removed, and it does not go lower. If you measure under 4 inches, this is more height than you want, and we would rather tell you that here than take your money and process a return in nine weeks. We built three heights for average to longer shoulders, and you are below the bottom of that range.

Your setting

Start at 4.5 inches. Both inserts out.

Take both flat inserts out of the liner before the first night. If you wake up with your head tipped down toward the mattress, put one back in and give it another week.

Your setting

Start at 5.5 inches. One insert in.

This is the middle setting and it is where most people land. Leave one insert in the liner and take the other one out. Keep the spare somewhere you will find it again.

Your setting

Start at 6.5 inches. Both inserts in.

Leave both inserts in the liner. If your mattress is soft, your shoulder will sink further into it than the measurement suggests, so stay at 6.5 for the first week before you take anything out.

Whichever setting you start on, give it seven nights before you change it. Your neck adjusts more slowly than you expect, and changing the height every morning is how people end up concluding that nothing works. It is also why the trial is 60 nights and not 30.

How we got here

We bought the competition and took it apart.

Eight best sellers, ordered and measured with a tape. They run from about 4 to 6 inches, and every one of them is a single fixed number chosen for an average person. One arrived under a different brand name than the one we bought it from, which tells you how much of this category is the same stock pillow with a new logo on the label.

Then we read 95 critical reviews of them. Wrong height was the number one complaint on every single product. The second was that the height did not last. We designed around both of those and nothing else.

What the price is for

The difference is in the build, not the label.

You can buy a pillow with removable layers for about half this. We know, we bought one. Here is what is different about this one, stated plainly enough that you can check every line when it arrives.

  • Slow recovery foam. Press it and it takes three to five seconds to come back. If a sample comes back with instant rebound, we do not ship it.
  • The contour lives only in the top layer, so the surface feels identical at 4.5 inches and at 6.5. Cheaper versions contour the whole stack, which is why the feel changes every time you adjust them.
  • The rear edge sits half an inch lower than the neck roll, so you can lie on your back for part of the night without your head being pushed forward.
  • An inner liner with its own sleeve for each piece, so the inserts stay where you put them instead of shuffling around inside the cover.
  • A matte knit cover that unzips and goes in the machine.
In the box

What actually arrives.

  • The pillow, one sculpted piece, 26 by 16 inches.
  • Two flat one inch inserts in their own liner sleeves.
  • The knit cover, already on it, removable and washable.
  • A fit guide card with the shoulder to ear measurement printed on it.

About the size, before you ask.

The Shadebourne Pillow is 26 by 16 inches. A standard bed pillow is 26 by 20. Ours is the same length and four inches shallower, and that is on purpose. The extra depth on a standard pillow is the part your head never touches when you sleep on your side, and filling it adds cost and weight for nothing.

What that means in practice: a standard pillowcase will go over it, but it will bunch across the contour and you will feel that under your ear. The knit cover it arrives in is the case. It unzips and goes in the machine, and a spare is worth having.

Sixty nights

Your fourth pillow should be your last.

Two weeks is not enough time to know. Most pillows in this category need one to two weeks before your neck settles, and most trials run thirty days. That arithmetic is why so many people end up keeping something they do not like: by the time they were sure, the window had closed.

Sleep on it for sixty nights. If it is not your height, tell us and we send you a prepaid label. We pay the return shipping, there is no restocking fee, no partial refund, and nobody is going to ask you why you took so long.

Questions

The things people ask first.

What if even the lowest setting is too high for me?

Then this is not your pillow, and we would rather you knew that now. With both inserts out the pillow is 4.5 inches and it does not go lower. Measure from the top of your shoulder to the top of your ear first. If that comes in under 4 inches, you need a thinner pillow than we make.

We built three heights covering average to longer shoulders. That is a deliberate choice rather than an oversight, and pretending otherwise would just cost you a return.

Will it fit my pillowcase?

Not properly, and we would rather say so up front. The pillow is 26 by 16 inches against a standard 26 by 20. A standard case will go on, but it bunches across the contour and you will feel the ridge under your ear.

The knit cover it arrives in is the case. It unzips and goes in the washing machine.

Why is this twice the price of a pillow that looks the same?

Because most of what makes this work is not visible in a product photo. The contour sits only in the top layer, so the feel does not change when you change the height. The inserts have their own sleeves so they do not shuffle around. The foam is slow recovery rather than instant rebound. The rear edge is lower than the neck roll.

None of those show up in a listing image, and all of them are things we found by buying the cheaper versions and sleeping on them. If you buy this and cannot tell the difference within sixty nights, send it back and we pay the shipping. That is the only honest way for us to answer this question before you have it in your hands.

Will it go flat?

There is nothing loose inside it to migrate, compress unevenly or clump, which is the failure mode behind most of the flat pillow complaints we read. It is one sculpted piece of foam and two flat inserts.

What we will not do is put a number of years on it before we have a sample that has been slept on for that long. Sixty nights is the promise we can actually keep today.

Will it smell when it arrives?

Foam has an odour when it first comes out of its wrapping. Take the cover off, leave it in the room for a day, and it goes. It is at nose level all night, so we would rather you aired it out before the first use than found out the hard way.

It arrives compressed. How long until it is the right shape?

Unpack it, take the cover off and give it 24 hours flat before you sleep on it. If it has not reached full height by then, that is a defect rather than a waiting game, and we will replace it.

Can I wash it?

The cover, yes. It unzips and goes in the machine on cold, then air dry.

The foam core and the inserts, no. Memory foam does not survive a washing machine. Spot clean and let it dry fully before the cover goes back on.

I roll onto my back during the night. Does that ruin it?

No. The rear edge sits about half an inch lower than the neck roll, so when you roll back your head is not pushed forward. It is built for side sleeping and it tolerates a few hours on your back, which is how most side sleepers actually spend a night.

What if I want to change the height in six months?

Unzip the bottom edge and move an insert. That is the whole job, and it works the same on night 400 as it does on night one. Keep the spare insert somewhere you will find it: it is the only part of this that people lose.

How do returns actually work?

Email us inside sixty nights. We send a prepaid label. You post it. We refund the full $99 including the shipping you paid to get it.

No restocking fee, no partial refunds, and no requirement to send it back in the original packaging. You do not need to have used it gently.

Set it once. It is the same height in the morning.
